The Pennsylvania Market

Our Home State, and Yours

Genesis works out of 345 Morgantown Road in Reading. Pennsylvania is not a territory we expanded into; it is the ground this company grew out of. The shops along the Schuylkill, the studios on main streets from Erie to Scranton, the busy rooms in Lancaster and the Lehigh Valley: those are the chairs nearest our own front door, and we take some pride in seeing them do well.

Retail is how a fully booked room earns something beyond the hours it can physically sell. The catch with a national brand is that the same bottle sits on a shelf along the client's drive home, often cheaper, and the repeat purchase never finds its way back to you. A bottle wearing your salon's name has no competing price anywhere in the state. We formulate it, fill it, and design the label. You decide which of the sixteen belong on your shelf and what each one is worth.

Climate & Water

Four Full Seasons, Limestone Underneath Them

Pennsylvania hair survives two opposite climates every twelve months, and the tap water rarely offers a break during either one.

The Calendar

Humid Summers, Radiator Winters

Swelling and frizz in July, static and breakage in January

Summer here is genuinely wet. Air across the river valleys stays heavy from June into September, and a finished style begins swelling and roughing up before the client has crossed the parking lot. Then the year turns over. From October through April the heat runs constantly, whether that is a radiator, baseboard, or a furnace pushing dry air through the ducts, and the same client comes back with static she cannot brush out and mid-lengths that feel like straw.

One book, two opposite problems, six months apart. Pennsylvania shelves tend to carry a finishing set and a hydration set side by side rather than betting a retail wall on one season.

Lead with: Amethyst Oil, Style & Shine Spray, and In Control Hairspray to hold a finish through the humid stretch, then Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner with Deep Repair Treatment once the heat comes on and the indoor air dries out.

Water Chemistry

Limestone Valleys and Hard Taps

Mineral buildup, flat color, brass in blondes

A great deal of Pennsylvania sits on limestone. Water travelling through it collects calcium and magnesium, and by the time it reaches a shower head in York, Allentown, or Lancaster County it is hard enough that a stylist can read it on the hair. Lather thins out, texture feels coated, freshly done color goes flat weeks early, and blondes drift warm and muddy long before their next appointment.

Households on well water in the rural counties have it harder still. Retail that addresses mineral buildup, and keeps blonde tones honest between visits, is the most direct protection for the work you just finished in the chair.

Lead with: Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner, Deep Repair Treatment, and Everyday Miracle Treatment for hard-water conditions, with Purple Shampoo within reach of every blonde on the books.

The Process

From Our Reading Floor to Your Shelf

The brand team stays with you from the first sample box through artwork approval and the first production run.

2

Choose Your Collection

Pick the lineup your book actually calls for, including what serves color-treated hair and clients wearing extensions.

3

Design Your Brand

Our designers build packaging around your salon identity, the run goes into production here, and you set the retail price.

Licensing & Labeling

Labels, Licensing, and the Paperwork Question

Cosmetologists and salon owners here are licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology, which operates under the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs within the Department of State. That license governs the services you perform and the shop you run. Putting your own brand on a retail bottle is a separate question, and a considerably smaller one than most owners assume before they ask.

Retail cosmetics anywhere in the country answer to the same federal FDA rules: the ingredients have to be declared, the net contents stated, and a responsible party identified. Pennsylvania treats product sales differently from salon services for tax purposes, so the useful step before your first order is a short conversation with your accountant about booking retail revenue cleanly alongside service revenue.

The rest sits on our side of the table. We print labels built to meet standard cosmetic labeling requirements, and every formula is vegan, cruelty-free, and free of sulfates, parabens, and phthalates. Your name goes on the bottle without a compliance project attached to it.

This is general information to help you plan, not legal advice. Confirm current requirements with the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology or your advisor.

Pennsylvania FAQ

What Pennsylvania Owners Ask Us

Do I need a separate license to sell my own branded products in Pennsylvania?
Your cosmetology and salon licenses from the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology cover the work you perform. Reselling branded retail runs through ordinary business and sales-tax registration instead, and we supply labels built to standard cosmetic labeling requirements.
Which products belong on a Pennsylvania shelf first?
Cover both halves of the year. Amethyst Oil, Style & Shine Spray, and In Control Hairspray carry the humid stretch. Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner with Deep Repair Treatment and Everyday Miracle Treatment carry hard-water conditions and the dry heating season. Purple Shampoo earns its place the moment you have blondes on the books.
Does it matter that Genesis is based in Pennsylvania?
It shortens the trip, and it shortens the explanation. Product is made and shipped from our Reading facility, so orders inside the state have a short distance to cover, and the people filling your bottles live with the same August humidity and the same hard tap water your clients complain about.
Most of my clients have fine hair. What should I carry?
Build around lift. Volume Shampoo and Conditioner with Volumizing Foam keep fine hair from lying flat, Dry Shampoo handles oily roots between washes, and Blow Dry Cream gives a smoother base before the dryer. Flex Paste, Styling Cream, and Pomade round out short cuts that need hold and definition.
What does starting a line actually cost?
The $99.95 sample kit is the whole line and the honest first step. Introductory collections begin at $1,000, and reorder minimums stay low enough that a one-chair studio in Bethlehem and a six-station salon in Harrisburg can both begin at a comfortable pace.
